TEARS IN MY HEART
by Gertrude Grace Sanborn With dry eyes, Lord, I stand before the world And this is how it must be Yet In my heart there are tears. Tears for my weakness in body Tears for rebellion and loss Tears for others who need Thee Tears for the price of the Cross. Tears in my heart, blessed weeping Or cold I would be and unmoved. Lord, keep me weeping With tears in my heart Lest prayerless I become disapproved.
SOMETIMES
A FRIEND HAS A SPECIAL NEED
Often it is a sudden illness, an unexpected surgery, or a
death. IT IS THEN THAT MY HEART YEARNS FOR MY FRIEND. I want to
comfort her or him. What can I do? What can I say? I want to send
my concern, or something to help as a word from my Heavenly Father.
A card is good but it does not seem to be enough for the heartache.
It is then that I reach in a cardboard box at the foot of my
stairs. It is then that I take a small book out of that box and
send it to my friend. That book is full of poems &
Scriptures--Christian poems, poems about Jesus, of my Saviour--poems
of His incarnation, His session, His second coming. There are poems
of sicknesses, of deaths, of grief, of children, of joys, of
sorrows, of God’s creation, and His precious Book. The poet of
these precious poems is my mother. Her name was Gertrude Sanborn.
Mother has a new name now for she’s been in Heaven for 20 years. She
“being dead yet speaketh”! (Hebrews 11:4c)

ABOVE
THE DIN
by GERTRUDE GRACE SANBORN Above the din and noise and strife, Above the cares of my own life: O Lord, I come to Thee and pray; Now teach me, Lord, just what to say. For self I cry, “I need Thy touch!” For I do murmur ever much: For others dear I yearn and plead That Thou wilt grant their every need. My Lord, I long to come to Thee So free and oft that I may be In reverent attitude all day To lift my heart and learn to pray.
SOME
BAD NEWS!
LAST NIGHT MY HUSBAND GAVE ME SOME BAD NEWS! He told me that
we may have to shorten the hours and days that our staff can work
here at THE BIBLE FOR TODAY! Why? Well, the other day Dr. Waite
mentioned that the BFT was borrowing money from other BFT funds to
pay our three staff employees: Barbara, our BFT secretary, Alan,
our BFT shipper--and even Daniel Waite himself. Dan is our son who
has been Dr. Waite’s assistant in the ministry for fifteen years.
He has been the brains behind all the computer-Internet facets of
our ministry. I had no idea our BFT financial situation was so
precarious! I want to re-state that DR. WAITE AND I RECEIVE NO
SALARY FROM THE BFT. Even when an offering is taken for us, we turn
it into the ministry. Dr. Waite does not take any commission on
his books or tapes. Please understand that. THIS IS VERY SERIOUS NEWS! As my husband told me last night, “The funds are not coming in and we cannot borrow from other BFT funds any more.” It’s true. IF we borrow more from the BIBLE FUND or another fund, we won’t be able to pay for the new shipment of DEFINED KING JAMES BIBLES which are on order for soon-arrival (November 15th); nor would we be able to make payments on the equipment that we have here in the office to carry on our work like you are used to having us do. Yet, we know that our staff have bills of their own. The truth is that my husband and I can’t underwrite the ministry too much more than we are already doing. As it is, we pay the every-day running expenses such as the 800# phone bill, the water bill, the electric and gas bill that runs up into the hundreds of dollars--as much as $800, $700, or $600 a month. We don’t charge rent, we don’t charge wear and tear, we don’t charge most of the phone bills, etc. We do this for the Lord and the furtherance of His work in the Bible For Today Ministry. But we should not & cannot pay the salaries. There was a time, when the BFT work was smaller. Back then we paid the former secretaries from our own pockets--though they did not know it, as we put it into the BFT funds. That was when my husband worked for nineteen years teaching school in the jungles of Philadelphia to support his family and the BFT ministry. Believe me! The BFT received the most in many ways! NOW I KNOW YOU HAVE FINANCIAL PROBLEMS, TOO. I know you have bills. But there comes a time when the well needs to be filled by those who drink from the water. PLEASE HELP US. IF EVERYONE WHO READS THIS LETTER GAVE US TEN DOLLARS A MONTH, WE WOULD NOT HAVE TO WRITE SUCH A PLEA. My husband hates these kinds of letters like I am writing right now. He seldom, seldom, seldom asks you to help us. He would give away the store, if I didn’t stop him. Just think of the financial supply if everyone would send us $25.00 or more on a regular basis--or even five dollars. Some of you could send $100 or more each month. PLEASE ASK THE LORD WHAT HE WOULD HAVE YOU DO TO HELP US. THANK YOU!!
PLEASE
PRAY FOR US AND OUR BFT STAFF!!
TEN YEARS AGO, ON OCT. 5, 1998, DR. WAITE WAS COMPELLED OF THE LORD
TO BEGIN A CHURCH IN OUR HOUSE. IT’S BEEN A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE!
THE OUTREACH OF THE BFT/BFTBC MINISTRY HAS REACHED, BY INTERNET
DOWNLOADS, TO 1508 IN CHINA & AS NEAR AS TO 9441 IN PENNSYLVANIATHIS IS AN URGENT PLEA!! THE BIBLE FOR TODAY BAPTIST CHURCH CELEBRATES TEN YEARS!
WAITES
CELEBRATED 60 YEARS OF MARRIAGE
One of the most exciting things--to me, at least, was our
SIXTIETH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY. It was August 27, 2008. Our daughter
and her husband from the South came to visit us. We were going to
celebrate “our day” together. When they were married in 1976, they
chose the same date as ours so we could remember each other better.
So I thought that was that!! I really didn’t think that the boys
(our three sons) would care at all that their parents had been
married 60 years! I told my husband, “If the children do not care,
I’m not going to do anything myself--unless you plan something.”
(Of course, he didn’t plan anything--no surprise there.) To be
perfectly honest, I was feeling bad because I did not think any of
our children, except David, who died in April, would care. Dave was
a big celebrator of days and seasons--which my husband is not fond
of doing, and I enjoy!!
COLLINGSWOOD’S
FARMERS’ MARKET FIRST AND THEN “THE FIELD OF GLORY”
So on the Saturday, before our actual anniversary, Dianne,
Reggie, and Dad & I went to the Collingwood Farmers’ Market. We got
peaches and apples, hand-stuffed olives, and a bar of hand-made soap
that had a fragrant scent. Dianne was thrilled with the fresh New
Jersey produce! After all, we are the GARDEN STATE! She got some
flowers for David’s grave--that was nice. He is buried in THE
GARDEN OF HONOR--the Veterans section of the cemetery. I call it
“THE FIELD OF GLORY.” My husband is a veteran--so we have three
plots there. (I always thought it would be nice to own other
property!) It is a very moving area of the grounds. The gravestones
are called “footstones” and they are flat to the ground. All a
person can see, as they approach this part of the cemetery, are
American flags flying their bright, beautiful red, white, & blue
twenty-four/seven! If you come see us, we can take you over there.
HARLEIGH CEMETERY & WALT WHITMAN’S TOMB
Our daughter wanted to visit her brother’s grave. So we drove
over to Harleigh Cemetery on the edge of Collingswood next to Our
Lady Lourdes Hospital in Camden. It is a beautiful cemetery. Walt
Whitman is buried there. His dates are May 31, 1819-March 26,
1892. He had a poetry collection called “Leaves of Grass”which was
called, in his time, “trashy, profane & obscene.” He was from
Camden, New Jersey. Records indicated he was gay. His $4,000 (1892
PRICES) mausoleum is there, containing many of his dead
relatives--even a nine-month-old baby.
THE
RIVER, THE GEESE, & AN OPEN GRAVE
So we walked over to the grave site trying to avoid the geese
dirt wherever we walked. Beautiful Cooper River flows near the
graves and the trees, and always--every time we go there--fresh
graves. The other day there was a grave gaping wide and open when
we walked by. Then all of a sudden, a big dirt-moving machine headed
our way, dumping a load of dirt into the hole. How very real is
death! How very real is the grave! How very real is a Hell to shun
and a Heaven to call “HOME”!
TRACT:
THANKSGIVING--HOLIDAY WITH CHRISTIAN ROOTS by DAW,JR. / GIFT:
5/$1.50+$1 S&H
WE PLACED THE FLOWERS ON THE GRAVE BY DAVID’S “FOOTSTONE.” It
is not easy for me to view his name on that stone. It makes reality
so real! It reads “born again & saved.” with Scripture references.
Previously I put a pinwheel there that twirls around in the wind,
along with the American flag that the American Legion pl aced there
last Memorial Day. I still can’t believe he is gone! I know he is
with Jesus. I know that. But--still he is and was my son--our son,
our second born. FLOWERS & WORDS CARVED ON A GRAVESTONE
A
LETTER TO A MOTHER FROM A MOTHER
I wrote a mother in Indiana recently whose Christian-son died.
She had other children--but no one takes the place of another. Only
Jesus could do that on the Cross. I poured my pen out to her in
sympathy. She said only a mother could have written my letter to
her--only a mother whose son had died could understand. How true.
HERE
IS A PARAGRAPH FROM THAT LETTER--BEAR WITH ME, PLEASE:
“With our minds we know that our sons are “with Jesus” and that it
is far better--but with our hearts we miss them. We miss their
phone calls, their steps at the door, the confusion they caused us,
and wondering about them. But most of all, we miss praying for
them. Since he was a teen-age young man, Dave had a sad life. He
was in and out of hospitals. He had rebellion. Yes, Dave had
confusion; but, God saved his soul. Even though, as a young child
he received Jesus, he had some kind of awakening as an older adult.
Perhaps that was the time of his actual salvation. He often said
so. His testimony at the church he joined in Paulsboro, was
surprisingly outstanding. Hearing about his life there, comforted
us.”In the past, how empty have been my words of comfort to others--even though I had tried. I think of my own mother and her loss of my sister. I only knew the loss of a sister, not a child. I could understand that, for it was my grief. I could not understand my mother’s grief. I tried. I watched her. I comforted--but I didn’t REALLY know. But now I do--only she is not here for me to comfort. I miss her. But I do have her poems. I want you to have them, too. You will never regret ordering WITH TEARS IN MY HEART (BFT#3196 @ a special price of $15.00 + S&H)
GETTING BACK TO OUR 60TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
Our Granddaughter, Daniel’s daughter, wanted us to come over to
her house after the cemetery. She wanted to play a special trumpet
solo for us. I supposed it was in honor of our mutual
anniversaries. That was nice! We were a little late and I was
concerned she would think we had forgotten. So Aunt Dianne called
her, updating her on our whereabouts. Little did we know that
“update” was important. As we were driving, another granddaughter
from Maryland called Grandpa’s cell phone. There was static. It
was hard to understand Elizabeth. Aunt Dianne grabbed the phone
from her Dad and communicated to her niece. “We’ll call you later,
Elizabeth. I won’t forget.” was the message. WHAT A SURPRISE!!
A
TRUMPET SURPRISE!!
When we got to the house, no one was there except Anna, our
granddaughter. That was unusual. We sat down and the trumpet solo
began. “Happy Anniversary to you!!” How good! “At least Anna
remembered,” I thought. Then from the back of the house came our
children! There were our sons and our daughters saying
SURPRISE!! And that I was! Tears came to my eyes. THEY DID CARE
AFTER ALL! I was so wrong!
A
BEAUTIFUL TABLE & A WEDDING CAKE
Tamie, Dan’s wife and Anna’s mother, had the most beautiful
table set for us, croissant sandwiches, tiny candies in little
Cinderella shoes, and pretend diamonds all over the table. It was
beautiful! Jeannette had made a watermelon fruit bowl piled high in
the shell of the watermelon itself. Richard and Lorraine brought
beautiful roses in a red vase. Anna gave us six big balloons--one
for each decade! Son Don took pictures & showed some from the
past. Dan brought out old family movies Then get this! Dianne
and Reggie paid for a wedding cake--a regular wedding cake as if we
were a new bride and groom. It was lovely! I couldn’t get over
it. Our children had us cut it and feed each other, as if we were
just married. They did this for us! They really cared! It was so
wonderful to be there with our children--of course, I missed
David! They just wanted our family--just our original family.
They didn’t want to invite the world, for wherever we go, the world
is there, crowding around their father asking questions. They
wanted us all to themselves. That was fine with me!
CONGRATULATIONS & THANK YOU FOR CARING
Then to top it off, Dan sent our picture and a write-up about
our sixty years to our local papers, as well as a Cleveland, Ohio
newspaper. Dr. Waite and I are originally from Ohio. What a
surprise when we were sent a news clipping with our pictures in it
by mail from an Ohio friend, as well as opening our local town
“Retrospect” and seeing our faces and news spread before our eyes.
Now everyone knows what we look like. People have come up to us and
have said, “I saw your picture in the paper! Congratulations!”
“WHAT
HAS DR. WAITE BEEN DOING LATELY?”
I SUPPOSE THE FIRST THING TO TELL YOU ABOUT IS MY HUSBAND’S
NEW BOOK! It is called Second Timothy–Preaching Verse by Verse
(BFT#3105 @$11.00 + $4.00 S&H.) It has 244 pages. It is the eighth
in the continuing series of books that Dr. Waite has been writing
from his Bible-teaching sermons that he has preached in our BIBLE
FOR TODAY BAPTIST CHURCH. (The church and the BFT are separate
organizations.) Perhaps you have forgotten that Pastor Waite, in
his church ministry, preaches verse by verse, moving right along
with the flow of the Scripture narrative. It is refreshing, to say
the least, to have a pastor who actually preaches the Bible without
long stories constantly interfering with the teaching. Let me quote from the back cover: “I HAVE FOUGHT A GOOD FIGHT.” As the Apostle Paul wrote his last letter before going Home to Glory, he summed up his autobiography in three short clauses. The first was, “I have fought a good fight,” He did not deny that his faithful service for his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, was a “fight.” But he hastened to add that his “fight” for the Saviour and His Words was a good “fight.” He did not cut corners. He didn’t lie. He did not play favorites. He did not cower before his many enemies.
EMMANUEL
RODRIGUEZ SPOKE AT DBS ‘08 IN WISCONSIN
Before I rattle on any more, I want to apologize publicly to
EMMANUEL RODRIGUEZ, a missionary to Puerto Rico. He was one of the
DEAN BURGON SOCIETY speakers last July in Wisconsin. I forgot to
list him with the other speakers in my AUGUST BFT UPDATE. He spoke
first on Thursday evening before Mark Reno and Dr. Waite who always
speaks last every year. Perhaps I forgot, because I mentioned him
as reading a previous speech for CARLOS DONATE, a missionary to
Guatemala. Missionary Rodriguez’s topic was WHY I USE THE SPANISH
RVG. It was very interesting and you can order it to hear for
yourself when you order the whole DBS/’08 WISCONSIN MEETINGS
(BFT#3363/DV1-3@$35.00+$5.00S&H). As usual most everyone was on the
subject of the TEXTUAL ISSUE. You are really missing good
information by not having them in your home. You can see and hear
the DBS ’08. DAN WAITE and his team did an excellent job of
videotaping! Some of the other speakers besides Dr. Waite and Mark Reno, Rodriguez, & Donate, were the following: Barnett, Williams, David Brown, DiVietro, Moorman, Darrow, Jasmin, Ralph Brown, Grumblatt, Sutton, Reed, Stringer, Zeinner, J.P. Reno, Mark Reno, Daniel Waite, and Rainey. Maybe you’ve forgotten, but President Dr. Waite spoke on GNOSTIC HERESIES IN BIBLE VERSIONS, Vice President Robert Barnett spoke on BASICS OF BIBLE DEFENSE, and Vice President H. D. Williams spoke on WYCLIFFE CONTROVERSIES--the topic was on the man not the missionary organization (ORDER BFT#3363/DV1-3@$35.00+$5.00S&H). The women’s meeting is on the third disk. You’ll enjoy Mrs. PATRICIA WILLIAMS who spoke on THE BRILLIANCY OF THE KING JAMES TRANSLATORS. Then there were testimonies by TAMARA WAITE & ELINOR GORTON, as well as devotions by LINDA BROWN. I gave a tribute to JANE HOLLOWOOD who went HOME during the year.

WHENCE
PROCEED THE FEARS OF DEATH ?
Several years ago, some friends gave my husband a copy-machine
book called THE CHRISTIANS’ CONSOLATIONS AGAINST THE FEARS OF DEATH
WITH SEASONABLE DIRECTIONS HOW TO PREPARE OURSELVES TO DIE WELL.
I’ve had it with my “to read” books, but never did--just held it in
my hands. The author is Charles Drelincourt, a late minister of the
Protestant Church of Paris. It was originally written in French and
published in a fifth edition in 1824 in Virginia. The author was a
pastor who lived from July, 1595 to November, 1669. During his
ministry, he comforted & consoled scores of dying people and their
loved-ones. This 612-page book is a compilation of his thoughts on
“death.” After David Waite, our son, died in April of this year (2008), I was drawn to the book, read hundreds of pages of it, and shared Chapter VI, WHENCE PROCEED THE FEARS OF DEATH with my radio listeners. I was much helped by this man’s Scriptural guidance and wanted to share it with you. (The book is not for sale--as it is very large & long and in a copy machine format.) I have shared it with my Just For Women RADIO program listeners. ALL THE JFW FIVE PROGRAMS ARE ON A DISK: (JFW/DVD-110 @ $7.00 +$2,00 S&H or #JFW Audio tape @ $4.00 + $2.00 S&H). Pastor Drelincourt begins the chapter by saying the following: “As a wise and skillful physician carefully examines the causes of the disease before he prescribes a remedy. . . .I think it highly necessary to examine, with care and exactness, whence the Fears of Death proceed, before we begin to apply those consolations with which we hope to fortify the Christian soul, for when we shall once understand the causes and nature of the disease, we shall without difficulty, be able to assign the proper remedies.”
WORDS
OF WISDOM ON THE FEARS OF DEATH
✸1. In the first place we think too seldom upon death and
meditate too little upon the misery and frailty of our poor decaying nature. ✸2. We all say, that Death if inexorable [inflexible, relentless], and that it is deaf, and hath no ears; nevertheless we live, for the most part as if we had made a covenant with death, and were at agreement with the grave, as if we were well assured, that death was afar off, and that it would not come of a long season. ✸3. We look upon death as accidental, as a thing that happens by chance, and confine our considerations to the means that produce it; whereas we should be fully persuaded that God hath not only determined and appointed death itself, but also all the causes and means which usually attend it. ✸4. We are too deeply rooted here below; we are so fastened and attached to this world, that we would willingly abide here for ever, and cannot bear the thought that death will remove us. ✸5. Another principal cause of the fear of death, is, a Sinful Life. We abandon ourselves to all the vice and debauchery of a dissolute age. We suffer ourselves to be seduced by bad company, and carried away by a torrent of pernicious customs. It is therefore no wonder if death appears terrible to us, because it comes against us armed with our own sins, and has for its harbingers the stings of our own consciences. ✸6. We distrust the providence of God, and know not how to place our confidence in his Fatherly care; we have too good an opinion of ourselves, and of our own abilities; we cannot resolve to die, because we fancy ourselves to be of very great importance to the world, and that our death would make an irreparable breach in the church of God, the state, or our family. ✸7. Because the soul and body are joined together in so strict an union, we cannot imagine how they can be separated without the greatest and most exquisite pains. Nay, so great is our infidelity, that we cannot rely upon the promise which God hath given. . . Paradise is rich, and abounds with the sweet delights; but the gate to it is strait, and all chocked up with thorns. ✸8. One of the chief reasons we fear death, is, because we look upon God as a most severe judge, inflamed with anger and indignation, and armed with vengeance against us: whereas we should consider him as a merciful Father, full of the bowels of compassion and kindness. ✸9. Another visible defect is, we do not embrace with a true and lively faith, the death and passion of our Lord and Saviour. We all talk of Jesus Christ crucified; but we do not comprehend the divine virtue of his passion, nor feel its efficacy. . . . His blood hath marked out for us the way to paradise, and procured us an entrance into it. ✸10. To avoid the horror which thinking on the grave is apt to give us, we do not reflect, as we ought, that our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ hath himself lain in the grave, and that he hath sanctified it with his holy and divine presence. ✸11. We look upon death, as if it was in its full strength and vigor; whereas we should remember, that Jesus Christ, hath overcome and disarmed it by his resurrection, and that we have nothing to do but to follow the glorious track of his victorious wheels, and fasten that furious beast to his triumphant chariot. ✸12. We do not consider enough, with a serious and religious attention, that our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, is not only risen from the grave victorious and triumphant, but that he is also ascended into the highest heavens, as our forerunner, to prepare a place for us; and that by departing our miserable bodies, we follow the footsteps of our glorious Redeemer, to go and reap with him, the immortal fruits of his ineffable victories. ✸13. We confine ourselves too much to the contemplation of our frail, corrupt and mortal nature; and we seldom enter into this most necessary meditation, that by the Holy Spirit we are nearly and inseparable united to Jesus Christ, the Prince of Life, and the Fountain of Light; and that we have already in us the seeds of blessedness, or glory and immortality. ✸14. As the Children of Israel murmured in the desert against Moses, and longed to be again in Egypt, forgetting the bitter slavery under which they had groaned. . . we do not reflect upon the evils from which death delivers us; we only think upon the vain delights and seeming advantages of which it deprives us. ✸15. We foolishly imagine that death destroys and reduces us to nothing; and do not consider, that, without touching our essential part, it only takes from us sin, in which we were entangled, and breaks the rest of the chains of our spiritual bondage; so that death is rather the death of sin, than of the faithful. ✸16. Another great error in us is, we do not lift up our minds to contemplate the glory prepared for us as soon as our souls shall have left our languishing bodies. ✸17. We dwell too much, upon the rottenness and corruption that threatens the body; whereas we should, by faith, extend our views to the glorious resurrection that shall soon follow. ✸18. We do not meditate as we ought, upon that fulness of bliss and glory which is prepared for us from the foundation of the world, and of which we shall have the full and perfect enjoyment, when Christ Jesus shall come from heaven. . .He shall then re-unite our souls and bodies, for all eternity. “THAT HE MAY BE GLORIFIED IN HIS SAINTS, AND WONDERS MADE MANIFEST IN ALL THE FAITHFUL.” *Yesterday our secretary told me “The young may die. The old must die.” A woman eighty-six told a friend of ours, “Do not let aging bother you, but be thankful that you are aging because many do not have the privilege.”
At
Home With Him
by Gertrude Grace Sanborn At home with Him and willing rather To leave this house of clay and earthly care To dwell with Him, by His dear side be present-- Should I not joy to think I soon may share That place above, eternal in the Heavens, Prepared of God to make my rest complete; To be with Christ, to see and hear Him speaking, To spend my days just living at His feet? At home, at peace, at rest--I love the prospect. Tho dear ones here and friends are good and true. My home in Heaven allures me, and I wait To hear the Trump or walk the Valley thru. GERTRUDE SANBORN, my mother, wrote in her private devotional book about DEATH. I discovered her words today tucked in between today’s date and yesterday’s of her private devotions. She wrote. “No experience is so greatly dreaded as DEATH. People try to evade talking about DEATH, lest they bring it nearer. For the Christian, instead of DEATH bringing THE DREADED down into oblivion, it has been transformed into the gate of life, through which the Christian enters upon the full fruition of all the blessed things he has longed for. The Lord, by his own DEATH, has robbed DEATH of its sting and the GRAVE of its victory. “DEATH ‘seems’ to end all, but in reality, it ends nothing. It does not even break the continuity of life. DEATH can, for a little while, destroy the house in which a person lives. It must leave untouched the life, the mind, the soul, the Spirit--the person himself. There are two ways to look at DEATH. Man belongs to DEATH--it takes all away. DEATH belongs to the Christian (I Cor. 3:22). For the Christian: DEATH brings all for better gain! For the BELIEVER, DEATH snaps the link that binds him to scenes of sorrow and trial. It delivers him from a world of sin and wickedness and introduces him to a scene of ineffable bliss, holy repose and unbroken communion.” (I am not sure if this is copied or original with G.G.S. Usually when she “copied” a quote, she labeled it so.)
