THESE ARE PERILOUS TIMES!
CHRISTIANS MUST BE VIGILANT
Satan is out to destroy Christians and their families!
Let us not be too proud to HUMBLE OURSELVES
Under the Mighty Hand of God!

A PARKING LOT
Picture a parking lot twelve miles long and you are in it! Only it
wasn't a parking lot, it was a highway leading to the Tappan Zee Bridge.
It took at least an hour and a half, if not longer, to make it to the
bridge--and SIX & A HALF HOURS to pull into our driveway here in
Collingswood, New Jersey. A few days before, the same trip from home to
Connecticut was only four hours! What a day!
A CELEBRATION
THE DEAN BURGON SOCIETY'S ANNUAL MEETING
JULY 23-24, 2003
You see, my husband and I were coming home from two days of excellent
DBS meetings. It was the annual gathering of the DEAN BURGON SOCIETY! This
year (2003), we were the guests of EMMANUEL BAPTIST CHURCH on 296 New
Britain Avenue, Newington, CT 06111. It was the twenty-fifth year for the
Society and the twenty-fifth year that Dr. D. A. WAITE has been its
president. There were seventeen states and foreign countries represented!!
I wish you could have been there--maybe you were and I didn't see
you.
If you were there, you would have heard the excellent speeches
presented by our men. You must order the whole set. There
are 5 audio tapes (BFT #3147/1-5) for only a gift of $15.00 + $2.00 S&H.
Our son, Pastor Dan, did all the video work (except his speech). You must
order them. (BFT #3147VC1-2) @ $25.00 + $5.00 S&H) When you watch
or listen--whatever--you'll hear men like Pastor Bob Barnett,
our vice president, from Michigan, David Hollowood
from Pennsylvania, Pastors Gary LaMore and
Denis Gibson from the Toronto, Canada area. Then there are
speakers like Pastor David Brown with his video/picture
information from Minnesota, Editor Don Jasmin of
FUNDAMENTALIST DIGEST from Michigan, Pastor
Daniel Waite telling of the Society's published books from New
Jersey, and Allen Johnson from Florida. He
spoke on the errors in the 1960 Spanish Bible. We also heard H. D.
Williams, M.D., from Georgia with an interesting study on
the spiritual meaning of "salt" in the Bible, and also two messages by the
Dean of Emmanuel Baptist Seminary there in Connecticut,
Dr. Thomas Strouse, as well as its president and pastor
of the church, Dr. J. Michael Bates. We listened to
Charles Griggs from North Carolina for the first
time, as well as, the Russian Bible Society President, Bob Doom,
another North Carolinian. A friend of Mr. Nielson's, Roy
Magnuson, spoke from South Carolina and Col. Pedro
Almeida from Brazil, who is studying in Elkton,
Maryland, presented his heart against the corrupt Portuguese Bible.
Then, of course, my husband D. A. Waite (New Jersey), spoke once on
"Answering Fundamentalists Questions," and another time on "The
Accomplishments of the DEAN BURGON SOCIETY" over the last twenty-five
years.
A DBS WOMEN'S MEETING
YOU WOMEN READERS WILL BE EDIFIED WHEN YOU HEAR PATRICIA WILLIAMS TEACH
US ABOUT THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT (Galatians 5:22-23). I have heard many
talks and sermons on this subject but never have heard anything better.
Please get the DBS WOMEN's tape just to hear this teaching (BFT #3146 @
$4.00 + $2.00 S&H). You'll want to listen to it over and over
again. Then we had two "testimonies"--one by LINDA BROWN telling of the
Lord's dealing with her throughout the years and especially this past
year; and the other was by CLELIA ALMEIDA. Clelia spoke of her burden for
her own Brazilian people to have the Words of God translated accurately
for her countrymen. CAROLYN RENO was a dear. She knew the women's
testimonies had gone over-time, so she cut her testimony to a couple of
minutes. I was glad because I needed every minute. She gave us
news concerning the up-coming essay contest that she and her husband have
every year. They have challenged young people to study the
textual/version issues and write about it. This year the theme of the
contest has to do with the SUPERIORITY OF THE KING JAMES BIBLE OVER THE
HOLMAN CHRISTIAN STANDARD VERSION. If you are interested in this
essay/research, contact the Renos at PHONE: 301-739-8585.
A SPEECH ON "INSPIRATION"
I was burdened this year to speak to the women on "BIBLE
INSPIRATION" (BFT #3148 @ $2.00 + $2.00 S&H). I had just finished
making eight radio programs on the subject, "WHAT IS BIBLE
INSPIRATION, ANYHOW?," in order to refresh my mind on WHAT
"inspiration" really meant (#JFW /40 @ $4.00 + $2.00 S&H)).
So, when I sat down to make notes for the DBS WOMEN, it turned out that I
wrote the whole speech instead of notes. It is very important that we
understand the difference between a translation and the actual
"God-breathed inspiration." No translation--no matter how excellent or
revered-- is "God breathed"! Yet, some are insisting that MANY
translations are "inspired." When I was younger, I thought my Bible was
inspired; but as I've learned from my husband and, now, my personal study,
I see how wrong that was. God did not breathe-out the writings or saying
of the translators of the King James Bible. Do you think that God used
John Overall, Hadrian Savaria, or Robert Tighe the same way He used
Ezekiel, Nahum, Amos, or Paul? Maybe when you read or listen to my speech,
you'll understand what I am saying. It is an important, misunderstood
issue in the teaching of "inspiration" today. We get our understanding
of it all from 2 Timothy 3:16. The Greek word, "Theopneustos,"
is translated into the English words, "GIVEN BY INSPIRATION OF GOD."
THAT'S WHAT 'INSPIRED' MEANS: "GIVEN BY INSPIRATION OF GOD."
A translation cannot be "given by inspiration of God."
A LEAFLET FOR YOU
If you want a good, small leaflet on "THE MEANING OF BIBLICAL
'INSPIRATION'," write us. My husband wrote it years
ago. Send a gift of $2.00 for a few. (BFT#2237-T)
OR if you want my written speech, ask for it! (BFT #3148 @ $2.00 +
$2.00 S&H)
AN INDIANA MEETING NEXT YEAR
LORD WILLING, NEXT YEAR THE DEAN BURGON SOCIETY IS MEETING AT HERITAGE
BAPTIST UNIVERSITY IN GREENWOOD, INDIANA. Make plans now to attend. The
University's President, Russell Dennis, Jr. is a most gracious host. We
have been there before. The address of the school is 1301 West County Line
Road Greenwood, IN 46142. Keep abreast of the plans for DBS 2004
by consulting the DBS website (
www.DeanBurgonSociety.org.)
A DREADFUL PAIN
Do you realize that I have not written a BIBLE FOR TODAY
UPDATE since the month of April?
Then, right when it was time for me to write you again, I had a pain.
My, did it hurt! I knew that I wasn't going to have a baby--so it couldn't
be that! Soon the pain traveled until it parked in my back. "Guess I
better take my husband's suggestion and go to the hospital,"I
thought. So I grabbed my handy waste basket--just in case--and my husband
got the car. After pain, chills, and not caring if I died, I was stuck in
machines, and put to sleep for the first of three procedures. Then I had
needles put in me, antibiotics pumped into my veins, cultures taken, and
discovered I was a sick person. Didn't know it until then. They said,
"You not only have kidney stones, but you have septic blood!" So
after five and half days of hospitalization, I went home to take an
elephant pill every day. No wonder I had been so tired for so long! Not
from taking a large pill but from the sickness. Here I'd been trying to
act human when all the while I was not! (Well, sort of something like
that!)
After being put to sleep three times, two hospitalizations, and
three procedures (they don't call them surgeries now-a-days), I
became the proud owner of a large, white kidney stone. Am I kidney
stone free now? Well, not exactly--I have another one that my
urologist can't get to with all his fancy tools. So, I have to drink
water, and drink water, and drink water. Let me tell you, this abundance
of water drinking brought about an embarrassing situation for me on that
road to the TAPPAN ZEE Bridge yesterday! But--I won't go into that!
A MEETING IN MARLTON
APRIL 13, 27, & MAY 4, 2003
Well, let's see what should I talk about next? I think I'll start way
back where I left off. The last thing, I think, I talked about with you
was our time with PASTOR DAVID ADAMS at the NEW TESTAMENT INDEPENDENT
BAPTIST CHURCH in Nassau. We had excellent meetings there and met
interesting people. Remember I told about MR. AMOS FERGUSON, the famous
folk artist? In fact, Rose Johnson, whom we met there, is in the States
studying. She dropped me a card the other day.
Soon after returning from teaching in the Bahamas in February or
March--can't remember--my husband spoke for three Sunday evenings at the
PINE GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH in MARLTON, New Jersey. That church is on 1000
Marlton Pike/ Tuckerton Road. We were in MARLTON on the Sunday nights
around the "Easter" season. It is always good to be there with PASTOR &
MRS. TED SMARZYNSKI (856-985-9695) and their faithful church friends.
Since being there five years ago, Dr. Waite has developed beautiful video
presentations. (Remember, he used to have overhead transparencies?) Now
his presentation is in color and he uses the video projector. It is much
easier for the audience to follow, as well as for him to use. No longer do
we have to lug those hundreds of heavy transparencies for an overhead
projector that might or might not work--depending upon the church. We are
very thankful for this new equipment.
A GOOD IDEA FOR YOU
IT IS A VERY GOOD IDEA, IF YOUR CHURCH IS WITHIN SHORT DRIVING DISTANCE
OF US, TO INVITE MY HUSBAND FOR A SERIES OF SERVICES FOR SUNDAY EVENINGS,
THE MID-WEEK SERVICE, OR A SPECIAL BETWEEN-SUNDAYS SEMINAR. In fact,
during a month in the near future, Dr. Waite will be speaking three or
four Wednesdays in a row at a BAPTIST CHURCH in North Jersey. He'll be
giving his presentation on the DEFENSE OF THE KING JAMES BIBLE and its
underlying Greek and Hebrew texts. If you are within driving distance, it
will be an opportunity to meet him. (Call us for details when they become
known) I imagine there will be a book table. In fact, if you want that
teaching series, you can order it when it is ready.
A GRANDDAUGHTER'S GRADUATION
I am always going away. To be perfectly honest, sometimes I do
not want to go. I get so tired. Do you know airports & meetings
are tiring?--but maybe not as tiring as the road to the TAPPAN ZEE Bridge!
Anyhow, I always go with Dr. Waite--well, almost always. So I looked
forward to two personal trips in May of 2003. One was for our oldest
granddaughter's university graduation in Florida. My husband felt he had
to stay home because of the expense and the time away, but Grandma wanted
to see Kristen in her robes receiving her honors. After all, she is my
only daughter's daughter!! She graduated Magna cum laude, you
know. My husband graduated from seminary with such an honor, but I didn't
think it would be proper to brag about him at the time (nor would he have
wanted me to)--but with a grandchild, it is different. After all, I am her
grandmother! It was wonderful! I was and am so proud of her!
A GRANDSON'S WEDDING
We barely were home, when both my husband and I boarded planes, walked
concourses, took electric carts, and ate airport food again. Yes, we were
off to FORT SMITH, ARKANSAS! What a beautiful new airport with fancy wing
chairs in the waiting rooms. After renting a car, we drove to near-by
POTEAU, OKLAHOMA! It was in this community that Grandson Rich Waite met
his bride, Summer. So, it was with joy that our family arrived--not all of
us--but some from Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Florida to
celebrate the great wedding day. Summer looked like Cinderella in her
white, hooped-skirt wedding dress with her upswept blonde hair. Rich
looked more handsome than I had ever seen him! I wish you could have been
there!
A WEDDING RECEPTION.
The wedding reception was unique--well unique for us East Coast people.
The Bride's Uncle Terry is a rancher. He brought a real, historic covered
wagon over to the reception. The wagon had a kitchen cupboard on the back
and handy places for a housewife to keep her wares as she traveled West
with her family. I remember when my parents and Grandma & Grandpa Sanborn
drove to Jacksonville, Florida before I was born. It must have been back
in 1925 or 26. Grandpa made my mother a "kitchen" in the back of their
shack camping house. It must have been patterned after the olden-days
covered wagons. I guess they lived in a covered wagon without wheels!
A COWBOY'S FEAST
Uncle Terry made barbecue and spare ribs, beans and creamed corn. I
wish I had been hungrier so I could have taken advantage of all that food!
They had three wedding cakes--chocolate, white, and a fiftieth anniversary
for Grandma & Grandpa Rosebush. My husband and I stayed until the wagon
was shut down and pushed onto the big flattop truck to go back to the
ranch. Then we went over to Rich's new red car that his cousins had
decorated with balloons & JUST MARRIED signs. As they drove away, Grandpa
D. A. Waite and I followed them for awhile, blowing our horn. My husband
asked, "Is this what grandpa's are supposed to do?"
A TRIP TO UNCLE TERRY'S RANCH
Let me tell you a little bit about UNCLE TERRY'S RANCH. On the
Friday before the Saturday wedding, we piled into about three cars and
drove and drove and drove. Finally we were at the ranch. It is one hundred
and thirty acres filled with four hundred cows, three hundred calves, and
forty horses. Oh yes, there were three bulls who kept busy all the time.
As we drove around the place, bumping up and down on the ground (Who uses
a road?), we saw a baby calf being born. It had just fallen to the ground,
and before we left that area, he was standing up by himself. What a
precious sight! I am so glad we had the ranch experience! You would have
liked it, too. It's a wonder my kidney stone didn't bump out of me that
day!
A STORY-TELLING PREACHER
On Sunday, we found a church nearby. But, I must tell you, I was very
disappointed in the message. It was a Bible Baptist church near the motel.
The speaker was a visiting evangelist whom the congregation seemed to know
very well. He started out with a series of jokes taking precious time, as
far as I was concerned, from the preaching and teaching of God's Word.
Then, for about twenty minutes, he told three long illustrations about
people he knew in Japan. This was all before he began to open up the Bible
and preach. It was about five to twelve by then. I whispered to my
husband, "Let's go!" He said, "NO!" We stayed.
A BRAVE WOMAN
After church and a short ride around the area, we drove into the
parking lot of the motel. We noticed some of our family group rushing
around. By their body language, we knew something was wrong. It was then
that we learned that our grandson's other grandmother had to make an
important decision. Grandpa Toro, who had been very ill, was nearing the
close of his earthly days. He had fought the battle with the Enemy. He had
spent his strength. Life was drawing to a close. Grandpa wanted to go
"HOME."
What a brave woman his wife was. With tears in her heart, she called
the doctor. Courageously, she gave her message, "Do Not Resuscitate (DNR)."
Neither she nor her husband wanted machines and tubes used when there was
no hope at all. She knew that her husband needed to have a peaceful exit!.
He had fought the battle. He'd suffered. Enough was enough! The last
journey had begun--the one all of us must face unless Jesus comes in the
clouds. Grandpa Toro left earth's Valley of Death to step over on Heaven's
Shore, but not before his wife could return to his side to bid the long
goodbye.
AN ENEMY
Death is a certain enemy! We all know it. Some do not want to speak of
it. Some do not recognize it. They ignore the fact that death is real.
They do not view their dead. They cremate and throw the ashes away to the
wind. A friend we've known for over thirty years fell suddenly on the
bathroom floor. When he got out of bed that morning, he had no idea that
he'd be starting his homeward journey to be "with the Lord" that day. We
all were shocked. The USA Marines in Iraq are at watch. They live in
danger every minute. One minute, they are driving along--alive, and
laughing, and the next minute, they are gone! Their loved ones live in
shock!
A VITAL DECISION
Life is not a promise with a longevity clause in it. Life is not a
contract of so many years before retirement. Life is fragile. Life is
sacred. Life is a gift. To be born is a borrowed breath from God! To walk
earth's field is an act of destiny. But it ends. Sometimes, life ends with
a long, slow, peaceful death like comedian BOB HOPE's recent demise, or it
can end with a sudden jolt like a lighting bolt or during an ill-managed
curve in the road. A certain question should be ringing in our ears,
"AM I READY TO MEET MY MAKER?"
YEARS AGO, THE LORD JESUS CHRIST CAME TO EARTH TO GIVE US MORTALS
READINESS FOR DEATH! He knew we were cursed and bound for eternal
damnation and fire in a living Hell. He loved you. He loved me. He cared.
The Lord Jesus is the epitome of a care-giver.
For when we were yet without strength, in due time, Christ died for
the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet
peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God
commandeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ
died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be
saved from wrath through him. . . .For as by one man's disobedience
[ADAM] many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one [JESUS
CHRIST] shall many be made righteous. . . .But where sin abounded,
grace did much more abound: . . . That as sin hath reigned unto death,
even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus
Christ our Lord. (Romans 5:6-8; 19-21)
HAVE YOU EVER RECEIVED THE LORD JESUS CHRIST INTO YOUR LIFE AS YOUR
PERSONAL SAVIOUR? DO IT NOW BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE. This breath may be your
last breath! Write us and tell us of your decision, please.
But as many as received him [Jesus Christ], to them gave
he [God the Father] power to become the sons of God, even to them
that believe on his name. (John 1:12)
A SPECIAL VISITOR
When I was in the hospital--sometime in June--our oldest granddaughter,
the one who graduated from the University of North Florida in May, came to
see us. It had been a long-planned trip. So, I was very disappointed that
I was in the hospital. But that's how life goes, doesn't it? It was good
to have her here. I was overwhelmed with the beautiful flowers given to me
while in the hospital. Someone gave me a dozen roses and my granddaughter
quickly fixed them in a professional way--taking the leaves and thorns
away. I'd forgotten that one of her jobs in the past had been at an
exclusive florist shop.
A THORN
THORNS HAVE A WAY OF PRICKING OUR FINGERS. I was outside a few minutes
ago trying to cut a few dead roses from our rose bush by the back fence.
Yes, I pricked my fingers a few times. In fact, a tiny thorn found a place
in my thumb. I'm glad I got it out. But, you know, we have "thorns" in our
lives that are not as easy to remove. Some "thorns" are illnesses that
never go away. Other "thorns" are children who have disappointed us or a
mate who has divorced us. Then there are "thorns" of unfulfilled love or
lost opportunities. Paul spoke of his "thorn," didn't he? We usually think
of a "thorn" as some kind of illness, but I don't think that is
necessarily so.
Many think Paul's eyes were diseased or damaged--perhaps when the Lord
spoke to him as that bright Light blinded him on the road to Damascus.
Remember? (My father-in-law went blind from untreated glaucoma. It's a
long story about a bad "doctor.") I don't really know what Paul's "thorn"
was. I like to think that the Holy Spirit did not let Paul tell us exactly
what that "thorn" was so you and I could put our "thorn" in 2 Corinthians
12:7.
And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of
the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, THE
MESSENGER OF SATAN TO BUFFET ME, lest I should be exalted above measure.
A MESSENGER OF SATAN
Isn't it strange to realize that the Apostle Paul's "thorn" was a
"messenger of Satan"? I'm not sure what that all means, but the Bible
says so. Patriarch Job in the Old Testament knew all about this kind of
"messenger," didn't he? God permitted such a "thorn" so Paul
would not get a "big head"! Paul asked the Lord to remove it two times.
Isn't that interesting?. Sometimes we never stop praying for our "thorns"
to be removed. It looks to me like there is a time to stop praying for
certain things in our lives, and just plain accept them. Perhaps that
"thorn" stuck in our lives will make us the kind of Christians God wants
us to be! What do you think?
A MEETING IN PALMYRA, NY
JUNE 14-15, 2003
I COULDN'T GO TO PALMYRA WITH DR. WAITE. (When my husband was absent--I
was still recovering from the first procedure-- my daughter-in-law, Tamie,
came each day and changed my bandage. I was so grateful!) Anyhow, Dr.
Waite drove five hours to the Palmyra Bible Baptist Church on 1206
Canandaigua Road by himself. He can do it, you know. Sometimes I
think that I have to be with him to help him. I guess I flatter
myself--for he's just fine! (Ha!) Though it was the first time for his
being in Palmyra, it was not the first time to be hosted by PASTOR & MRS.
RICHARD BRASSER (PHONE: 315-597-5781). We've been with them twice before
in their previous church. So, it was good for Dr. Waite and Pastor Brasser
to catch up on the news. I was sorry I wasn't there.
Many were sorry, too, because I was supposed to present THE
TRIBUTE TO FANNY CROSBY for them that Sunday night. Some of
our friends came especially to meet me and see "Fanny" but I wasn't there.
Maybe another time.
If you want the messages for that mini-seminar, ask for THE
PALMYRA MEETINGS (BFT #3142/1-4 @ $12.00 + $2.00 S&H) It doesn't
hurt to order several of these teaching audio tapes. Though much of the
teaching is the same, it is presented especially for the group Dr. Waite
is with and for their needs. The "Q & A" time is always excellent and
unique to the church.
A CALIFORNIA TRIP
I've only been to California three other times. The first one was to
PASADENA where I was a reporter for THE BIBLE FOR TODAY NEWSREPORT.
It was some big evangelical women's caucus for "Christian feminists."
That's when I interviewed VIRGINIA MOLLENKOTT (BFT #697 @ $4.00 +
$2.00 S&H) who, as you know, has since come out of the closet!
Another time was a few years ago when BETTY PERRY's husband invited my
husband to teach their church about his book, DEFENDING THE KING JAMES
BIBLE (BFT #1594 @ $12.00 + $4.00 S&H). I think he
was a deacon in the church. I remember I had a doozy of a cold at the time
and couldn't really enjoy much of anything. Then the third time I was in
California was in the Los Angeles airport on our way to Hawaii--the best
vacation Dr. Waite and I ever had!! Come to think of it: we may have been
in that same airport on the way to Singapore!
A WEEK-END IN LOS ANGELES
JULY 4-6, 2003
DR. R. L. HYMERS, Jr. invited Dr. Waite to come to his church over the
4th of July week-end to celebrate INDEPENDENCE DAY with him and his
church, THE FUNDAMENTAL BAPTIST TABERNACLE OF LOS ANGELES and with PASTOR
WALDRIP & PEOPLE OF CALVARY ROAD BAPTIST CHURCH in Monrovia, California.
It was a co-operative-type conference. FEEL FREE TO ORDER THESE AUDIO
TAPES. Ask for THE LOS ANGELES MEETINGS (BFT #3143/1-2 @
$7.00 + $2.00 S&H).
A BASEBALL GAME
One meeting was held with a luncheon after the teaching at PASTOR
WALDRIP'S church. After the lunch, everyone piled into their cars or vans
to drive over to the Dodger baseball stadium to watch the L. A. Dodgers
lose the game to their opponents. (I wasn't with him--I'll tell you about
that later). There were fire-works after the game--a splash of beauty up
in the sky. I would have liked that!
I was amused because I could hardly get Dr. Waite to attend a baseball
game of any kind when we had young sons around. And, when he was there, he
always had a book in his hand. A person can't write books and papers and
play games, too. I remember one time we were at some kind of picnic--maybe
it was camp. My husband was actually playing baseball! I'd never seen him
play! Could he hit the ball! I was impressed. "Where did you learn to
play baseball?" I asked. I'd been married to him for years. "At
camp!" he replied. I'd forgotten all those summers he went to Camp
Roosevelt in Perry, Ohio, and learned many sports.
A SERIES ON BIBLICAL DEFENSE
Though I was only there for the Sunday evening service at PASTOR HYMERS'
church in Los Angeles, I could tell by the favor of his people's response
to Dr. Waite's teaching that they liked him and his lessons. There were
two speakers that evening. I'm sorry I don't remember the name of the
evangelist. I do remember his wife's hair length. I think it was shorter
than her husband's. There was no "glory" there (1 Corinthians 11:15)!
Anyhow, all the people that were regular in the church looked great!. The
men were in dark suits and the women had good length dresses--no knees or
bare midriffs--and all of them wore a hat. It was impressive! No one told
me that I should wear a hat; but I do have a good head of hair. My husband
teaches that a woman's "covering" is her hair. (You should get his
messages on that from I Corinthians sometime--BFT #3048/11 @ $4.00
+ $2.00 S&H)
A CHOIR
Mr. Kincaid Griffith is the soloist at Dr. Hymers' church--and he can
sing. He leads the congregation as a choir with his voice with Pastor
Hymers' help, of course. It was a blessing to be a part of the church
choir from my seat in the auditorium. The auditorium, by the way, is large
and very nice. The whole building reminds me of a huge down-town office
building with large rooms and big stairways. It is quite impressive. Cars
are parked in a near-by parking lot. One of the men of the church watches
the cars during the services. Dr. Hymers, who has a heart for the inner
city people, told me that Dr. J. VERNON MCGEE'S church used to be a
stone's throw from his; and that EVANGELIST SCHULLER, the Methodist great
of past years, had a church around the block. All those churches moved
from the inner-city to more affluent neighborhoods. FBT is the only
fundamental work in that part of the inner city. In fact, BILLY GRAHAM had
his first Los Angeles' meetings down the street. I believe those were the
meetings that made Billy famous. Remember--that was when Randolph Hearst
ordered his papers to, "PUFF GRAHAM!" Those were the days before
Billy began to compromise.
A SPANISH INTERPRETER
My husband spoke that Sunday evening without an interpreter. Most all
of the services at FUNDAMENTAL BAPTIST TABERNACLE are preached in dual
languages--Spanish & English. Unknown to the church, until I spilled the
beans, is that my husband speaks fluent Spanish. So, he probably could
have translated his own messages. Although, he may not be "up" on all the
theological phrases--but I think he could do a yeoman's job. When my
husband was a student at the University of Michigan, he roomed in the
INTERNATIONAL HOUSE. His roommate was a Chilean named Francisco Bosch--so
Dr. Waite learned well the Spanish language. Then, when he was a student
at Dallas Theological Seminary--the old Dallas-- he was a pastor of a
Mexican Baptist church for a short while. Also, when Dr. Waite taught in
the Philadelphia school system to support his family and his ministry,
often he spoke in Spanish to his bilingual students. All in all the
meetings were well attended, well received, and enjoyed by Dr. Waite. It
was good to have been there.
AN INVITATION FOR ME
Way back in May as I was "resting up" from our Oklahoma, family,
wedding adventure, a California friend called, "I see you are going to
be in Los Angeles, Dr. Waite." How happy she was. She wanted to hear
and see him and me. "But Mrs. Waite is not coming!" was his reply.
Well, the long and the short of that conversation concluded with our
Southern California friend paying for an airplane ticket for me to visit
her. THEN I GOT SICK! What would we do with this non-refundable ticket?
A RIDE ON THE FREEWAYS
So, when the date came to depart, I was pleased. We landed at the
Burbank airport from Philadelphia. I was La Quinta-bound. (La Quinta is
near Palm Springs and the boulevards are named after famous people like
movie stars and presidents.) My husband rented a car and we zoomed off on
the freeways for a few days in the desert for me! What a delightful visit
with our friend! She treated me like a queen, made me rest, fixed me
meals, and we talked and talked like old girl friends. For the evening
meals, she drove me to restaurants and showed me the sights. Did you know
that Chinese restaurants are not open on the 4th of July?
A VIEW FROM A WINDOW
The view from her dining-room table was better than any view around
town! BREATHTAKING! It all reminded me of our days in Naples, Florida
(without the mountains), when my husband's parents were living--beautiful
grass, trees, water, and a golf course outside the back door. The sun was
hot--but dry. How good it felt on my bones! We went to church together,
and to the post office. I saw the old inn where famous movie stars like
Clark Gable escaped their fans. Nothing looked like a "desert" to
me--except out on the roads away from the houses. I kept thinking how
Israel's desert will some day "blossom as the rose" (Isaiah
35:1)!
A WINDMILL TREAT
And windmills! I never saw so many. As we drove to church in Los
Angeles that Sunday night, we passed through a section where the wind
blows through the mountains and sand. There, perched on every high
mountain-hill, it seemed to me, were hundreds and hundreds of modern wind
mills. They look nothing like the windmills we viewed in Holland years
ago. All of them were churning and moving like synchronized swimmers in
the sky. They were making electricity for the valley. I'd never seen so
many before, have you?
A GOODBYE
It was hard to bid goodbye to my friend. We were only acquainted before
through mail and an occasional California visit, but now; I felt like we
had known each other all our lives. I think it will be like that in
Heaven, don't you? Why can't earthly friends who see each other all the
time be so kind and understanding--less critical and judgmental?

A SCRIPTURE VERSE TO PONDER
If you are reading through your Bible this year, you may have noticed
in a recent reading Isaiah 21:9. It read like a current newspaper, doesn't
it?
And behold, here cometh a chariot of men, with a couple of
horsemen. And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen: and
all the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground.
IN GOD'S CARE,
